Utopia is a documentary - Challenges and Career Rewards in Project Management
In this session, Michelle Cooke, a seasoned project management consultant and currently the Project Manager for Light Rail Stage 2B project, will share her 17-year career evolution from an environmental scientist to a project manager involved in major infrastructure projects. Drawing from personal experiences, she will explore the challenges and rewards of project management, offering insights on staying resilient in a demanding role, saying yes despite the doubts, and thinking of future self in major life decisions.
Michelle will also tackle the key question: Is it better to be skilled and trained in project management, learning technical skills along the way, or to be a subject matter expert who later acquires project management expertise?

Michelle Cooke is a project management consultant and is currently the Project Manager for Light Rail Stage 2B project for Major Projects Canberra. She coordinates a multi-disciplinary team for the delivery of the design and environmental approvals for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Michelle has an environmental science and project management background, and has more than 17 years’ experience in a variety of major infrastructure projects, and program management roles with Defence and SEQ Water. Her previous experience includes a range of project management roles in planning and approvals, procurement, construction delivery and operations in both the private and public sector on major projects, including light rail, road, and water infrastructure (dams, pipelines, desalination).
