Tasmania is one of the few places in the world to already be 100% self-sufficient in renewable electricity, however transport accounts for around 21% of our state-wide emissions (excluding land use and forestry). Metro Tasmania has partnered with pitt&sherry to deliver the Metro Tasmania Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Trial

The project consists of two sub-trials of different zero emission technologies. In the Battery Electric Bus Trial (Launceston) four Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) are now operating on Metro’s Launceston network for a two-year trial period; and in the Hydrogen Electric Bus Trial (Hobart), three Hydrogen Electric Buses (HEBs) will operate across Metro’s southern network for a three-year trial, commencing in mid-2024.  The Tasmanian Government is funding the trial to gain valuable operational experience and learnings that will help inform how we can reduce Metro’s vehicle emissions, as Tasmania works to achieve net zero emissions from 2030.  The project will also demonstrate the first commercial use of sustainable green-hydrogen in Tasmania.

Project lead Andy Corbould from pitt&sherry will detail the key challenges, opportunities and risks involved in successfully delivering the planning phase of such a major transport infrastructure project. The project was awarded both the Tasmanian 2023 Project of the Year and the AIPM national Sustainability Project of the Year for 2023.
